Braiding Sweetgrass – Machias, Summer 2017

This summer we made several trips to Machias with Braiding Sweetgrass circles, to gather Sweetgrass and soak in the beauty and good medicine of Jasper Beach and the nearby ancient Passamaquoddy petroglyphs at Picture Rocks. We noted many other plants as foods and medicines growing along the salt water marsh, and were in awe of the old growth spruce and deep sphagnum undergrowth flanking the coast on higher ground. Both spruce root for baskets and canoes as well as sphagnum for diaper material likely were gathered here until not very long ago. On our last sweetgrassing trip, when the wild cranberries had ripened, we gathered some of them for tangy holiday cranberry sauce.
