Words in the Woods: Patricia Austin
Gedakina’s own Patricia Austin will be one of the chosen poets for Vermont State Parks’ Words in the Woods - a program that “connects poetry lovers and newcomers with Vermont poets, all within the beautiful backdrop of our Vermont State Parks”.
Ms. Austin was born and raised in Vermont and is of French, Scottish and Wabanaki descent. She works on special projects at Gedakina, a Native American non-profit organization assisting Indigenous families of the Northeast. Patricia is author of Wliniwaskw Wliahki ~ Good Spirit Good Earth, a pocket-sized book full of her poetry and photography written in her Western Abenaki language with English translations. She is also the author of Pâtisserie Gluten Free. She is currently working on a Wabanaki cookbook.
Please register in advance to attend this in-person program. Families camping at or otherwise visiting the parks will be able to join the presentations without advance registration.
The book shows a detailed photo of ice crystals on a window with a greyish, purple-blue background. Text describes the poetry book. A round sticker with a typewriter indicates the poems and photography were done by a local author. The text is written in Western Abenaki and translated into English. The book is part of the Gedakina Book Series that features Indigenous authors from surrounding communities.
